From Bedroom to Bistro: Making Magic During My Kitchen Demo

🏠 From Bedroom to Bistro: Making Magic During My Kitchen Demo

Renovation Rule #1: Improvise with flair.

When I decided to demo my kitchen and install new tile flooring in the main level of my house, I knew I'd be trading convenience for creativity. What I didn’t expect was how charmingly chaotic my workaround would become: I turned one of my upstairs bedrooms into a temporary kitchen. Yes, a room that should be hosting guest beds and writing desks now hosts my coffee maker, microwave, and a small prep station that would make any food truck chef proud.

Another key consideration is that it has been hot; on several days there have been heat warning days. Having a dedicated tiny refrigerator with sparking water, water filter pitcher, and having a table top icemaker has been great for all the water breaks I need when smashing soffit or prying up carpet strips.

Grace and gratitude have also become essential.  With only my sister working on the project with me when she is able to come visit, the bulk of the work falls on me.  I am trying to take each day at at a time and make the progress that I can with self-care and kindness.  This can be hard when you have a tendency to push yourself.

✨ What It Took to Set Up

It’s not glamorous, but it’s functional. And strangely… it’s fun. I’ve started calling it “My Magic Pink Kitchen” because everything feels a little whimsical when you’re boiling pasta on a hot plate or making a breakfast sandwich in my coral pink sandwich maker. Often feel like a kid pretending to cook with a grown up easy bake oven.

💡 What I’m Learning

  • Efficiency is relative. I’m cooking simple meals, using fewer dishes, and rethinking what I actually need in a kitchen.
  • Flexibility fuels creativity. I’ve tried new recipes simply because they work better with a toaster oven and a hot plate.
  • Water is essential. Both for hydration and cleaning.  Ensure you have a plan for both.
  • Beauty can be built in phases. There’s something empowering about watching the bones of my home evolve—and knowing I’m the one orchestrating it all.

💬 Final Thoughts

Redesigning a kitchen is messy, inconvenient, and occasionally full of dust. But repurposing space in the meantime? That’s a form of artistry too. Whether it's tea brewed in a spare bedroom or a quiet dinner by a stacked tile box, home isn't about perfection—it's about adapting with heart.
