What happened to "Civility" in US Society?

Civility is defined as a formal politeness in behavior and speech. As the Commander of the US European Command retired Admiral James G. Stavridis listed "civility" as one of the traits of a true professional. After recent events in the Untied States I have to question, what happened to civility? I have no doubt that this post will offend someone and for this I apologize as I mean no offense. Instead, I would like to return to the days of a " civil society ," where when one disagrees with you, it does not make them guilty of a hate crime. When democracy called for public argument to uncover truths. When I was young I learned to say "Please" and "Thank you" and treat adults with respect. From my interaction with youth today, basic manners are a lost art. As I grew up I was introduced to Emily Post and Miss Manners as resources to use when I wasn't sure of the correct etiquette. These are resources I still use today and am gratef...

Use Your Super Powers

After COMICON Stuttgart, I had to return to being just plain Amy Hamilton again. I went to the grocery store to purchase some dog food, cat food, and people food....we all have to eat. Coming down from my super hero high and going back to the mundane was leaving me just a little maudlin. As I walked to my car with groceries in hand; I noticed an elderly German man checking out my car and at first was concerned that it had been damaged somehow. Instead, he informed me that he used to have a two seat convertible when he was young and was just admiring my car. He said, "I was going to be jealous of whoever the lucky driver is; but seeing you, I think any passengers in your car are very lucky to be with the driver." I laughed and offered him a ride, he declined graciously and told me a short story of one of his driving experiences on the authobahn in his old roadster. This small encounter left both of us laughing and reminded me that we all have a super power. Sharing ou...

Balance, Not Resolutions

January is an exciting time and many people make New Year’s Resolutions; like losing weight, giving up smoking, writing a book, and other pledges.  Studies show that only 8% of people keep their New Year’s Resolutions, however.  That drive and determination we have in January, quickly gets overwhelmed by our daily lives. The other day I was having coffee with a friend and neither of us had made any New Year’s Resolutions for 2017.  My friend told me that instead she planned to focus on a balance of her mind, body, and soul on a regular basis.  Making smaller adjustments in her life to achieve balance, rather than grand promises that wouldn’t withstand the crush of daily activities.  I thought was a great way to go about things.  I already have a similar program every other Thursday.  On Thursdays, I wake up and go to my body pump class first thing in morning.  At lunch, I have Bible study, to refill my soul.  After work, I have my l...
